Why We Do it
Many children in our community struggle with learning to read. The core of our mission is proper reading instruction for all, but especially for those with reading disabilities or dyslexia.
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. Children with language learning differences require proper reading instruction in order to make reading gains.
The public school systems do not have enough teachers to give the necessary individual or small group attention to the children who have difficulty learning to read. Through A+ Reading Room, we are able to work with these children giving them the specialized reading education they need to succeed.
What The Research Says
According to 2018 research, less than one third of Oklahoma children read at or above grade level on the National Assessment of Educational Progress. This is the lowest number of children reading at grade level since 2013. For about 60% of our nation’s children, learning to read is a formidable challenge, and for at least 20% to 30% of these children, reading is one of the most difficult tasks they will have to master throughout their schooling. The inability to read affects an individual’s entire life. Reading is the major foundational skill for all school based learning, and without it the chances for academic and occupational success are limited.
